Why a 4K label is not a complete night-recording test
Learn to assess road and cabin image claims without confusing resolution, sensor technology, infrared lighting and reflections.
Resolution describes the frame, not every detail within it
A 4K recording has a larger pixel grid than a lower-resolution recording, but the useful detail in that grid depends on the image that reaches the sensor and how it is exposed. Darkness, movement, headlights and reflections can all affect the result.
For a buyer, this means a bright parked still frame is not enough to judge moving road footage. Look at the situations you actually drive in: a vehicle passing, an approaching light source, a darker road and the rear view as well as the front.
Separate the road problem from the cabin problem
Cabin subjects are relatively close to the camera. On a model equipped for it, infrared illumination can help show interior activity when visible light is limited. That illumination does not light the road outside.
A product can provide useful cabin IR while its road cameras face very different lighting conditions. Ask which channel has IR and compare an interior clip separately from front and rear road clips. A family-level ‘night vision’ label does not answer that channel-specific question.
Read sensor claims at the channel level
STARVIS and STARVIS 2 identify supported Sony sensor technologies. A claim about the front sensor should not be copied to the rear or side cameras unless the exact specification says so. Lens, exposure and processing remain relevant too.
The approved N6 Pro configuration pairs a STARVIS 2 4K front channel with three 1080p channels. That is useful information because it names the front capability and the complete recording combination. It is more informative than applying a single front-camera headline to the entire system.
A polarizing filter is a tool with a trade-off
A compatible CPL can reduce some windshield reflections, depending on conditions and adjustment. It may also reduce incoming light. It should not be treated as a universal night-vision upgrade or assumed to be included with every model.
Check the exact compatible accessory and package. If reflections are a major concern in your car, consider the windshield and dashboard geometry as well as the filter. Installation and clean optical surfaces are part of the result that a specification table cannot fully represent.
Use a fair sample comparison
Compare original or high-quality clips from similar conditions and the same intended recording mode. Check every view you need, and watch the moving sequence before drawing a conclusion from one chosen frame.
| Look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Motion as well as stationary detail | A paused best frame can hide a difficult moving sequence |
| Bright-to-dark transitions | Your journey rarely has one constant exposure condition |
| Rear and cabin examples | The front headline does not describe all channels |
| The exact active mode | Resolution or camera combinations may differ by setting |
